Being a parent is challenging but being a parent with 2 under 2 is a unique kind of challenge. There are a few pointers that can help you get through the tough parts and help you better enjoy the beautiful parts.

TV IS OK IN MODERATION

If you need to take a break and your only option for distracting your little one is some screen time, then lean on it.  It is not recommended to use screens on a regular basis but it’s ok to keep it in your back pocket.  Try to limit screen time just before nap or bedtime because it can stimulate your little.

INCLUDE YOUR OLDER KID IN TASKS

Odds are that the older sibling will be very interested in helping.  Giving them a job will help them feel seen, important and involved. When it is time for a diaper change, ask the helper to grab a diaper or a pack of wipes. When naptime or bedtime is approaching, ask them to pick out a book or turn on the noise machine and night light.  Involving them will help you keep an eye on them when you are busy with the younger sibling, increase bonding, and will help them adjust to the changes in the family dynamics.

PRIORITIZE SLEEP

You are probably thinking that this sounds easier than it actually is.  Sometimes that might be the case but honestly, you can always work a little more sleep into your routine.  This might look like letting go of some other areas of your life to a degree. Don’t feel guilty about this. Try to aim for at least one solid stretch of 6 hours of sleep to help you with your energy, health, and mental health. This might mean pumping so that your partner can do a bottle feeding or going to sleep right away after the baby while your partner handles the older sibling and house. If you don’t have a partner, try to find a family member or friend that can help create a window of time so that you can get your rest.

SET A NAP SCHEDULE THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

Having 2 under 2 can easily get you nap trapped between multiple naps throughout the day.  In this situation, it is best to try to find a nap schedule that works for everyone.  Syncing both of your littles naps as best as possible will create more flexibility in your day and can also create a window where you can get a nap, shower, workout or chores in.

INVEST IN A HIGH QUALITY BABY CARRIER

Your toddler isn’t going to slow down just because there’s a baby in the house.  Wearing your baby is the easiest way to keep up with your toddler around the house, at the playground or wherever you may be having fun.  You want to make sure you have a carrier that offers ample support for your back and for the baby.  Carrying your baby in a baby carrier will also provide a comfortable place for your baby to sleep while on the go.

If you ever feel like you are drowning in parenting 2 under 2, know that you are not alone and that Rocky Mountain Sleeping Baby is here to help in any way possible.  Raising 2 under 2 is not easy by any means but there are things you can do to make it more manageable and enjoyable.  Take it day by day, and stay consistent on the things that matter most.
