How to Handle Sleep Training During Illness or Teething

At Rocky Mountain Sleeping Baby, we understand that sleep training can be challenging under the best of circumstances. When your little one is dealing with illness or teething, it can feel even more overwhelming. But don’t worry—you’re not alone, and there are gentle, effective ways to support your baby through these tough times.

Understanding the Impact of Illness and Teething on Sleep

Babies are particularly sensitive to changes in their health. Illnesses can cause discomfort, fever, and congestion, making it hard for your baby to sleep soundly. Contrary to popular belief, teething does not significantly impact sleep for most babies. While it can cause some gum soreness and irritability during the day, research shows it rarely disrupts sleep consistently. If sleep does regress during teething, it’s often due to changes in routine or how we respond to our baby’s fussiness—not the teething itself. These moments can interfere with your baby’s ability to self-soothe and maintain a consistent sleep routine.

When to Pause Sleep Training

It’s important to recognize that during periods of acute illness, your baby may need extra comfort and care. Sleep training during these times can be counterproductive, as your baby might be too uncomfortable to respond positively. At Rocky Mountain Sleeping Baby, we suggest that it’s best to wait until your baby has recovered before resuming sleep training.

Gentle Strategies to Support Sleep During Illness or Teething

  1. Maintain a Calming Bedtime Routine: Even if your baby isn’t feeling well, try to keep bedtime routines consistent. Gentle activities like a warm bath, soft lullabies, or reading a short story can signal to your baby that it’s time to wind down.
  2. Optimize the Sleep Environment: Ensure your baby’s sleep area is conducive to rest. A cool, dark, and quiet room can help soothe your baby. Using a white noise machine can also provide comfort and mask any disruptive sounds.
  3. Offer Comforting Relief for Teething: For teething discomfort, consider offering a chilled teething ring or a clean, cold washcloth for your baby to chew on. These can provide soothing relief to sore gums. Always supervise your baby during these activities to ensure safety.
  4. Consult with Your Pediatrician: If your baby is experiencing significant discomfort, consult with your pediatrician. They can provide guidance on safe pain relief options and help determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed.

Resuming Sleep Training After Recovery

Once your baby has recovered from illness, you can gently reintroduce sleep training. At Rocky Mountain Sleeping Baby, we specialize in gentle sleep coaching methods that respect your baby’s needs and temperament. Our approach focuses on creating a consistent bedtime routine, optimizing the sleep environment, and gradually encouraging your baby to self-soothe.

Remember, every baby is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. It’s important to be patient and flexible as you navigate your baby’s sleep journey. If you need personalized support, our certified sleep consultants are here to help.
